Since the 1930s, a silent and invisible human-made crisis has been growing within our environment and within our communities. “Forever chemicals,” known as Poly and Perfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS), used in countless applications and products, have polluted our environment, and have spread with each passing decade. PFAS have even been detected in rain and on the top of Mount Everest! PFAS are incredibly persistent, bioaccumulate in our bodies, and have been linked to a host of adverse health outcomes including decreased fertility, liver damage, and various types of cancers. We now must face the alarming reality that they have entered the blood of 97% of Americans and will continue to do so unless we act. It’s time for us to ask: How do we stop these chemicals from spreading and prevent further harm?

Current solutions temporarily shift the problem from one community’s tap to another one’s backyard

While these solutions temporarily protect public health, they cause us as a society to relentlessly address PFAS again and again and again in a never-ending cycle. So far, this may have been the best we can do, but this crisis calls for a better solution that can halt the persistent advance of this invisible threat. Picture a future where we can reclaim our right to clean water, free from the grip of PFAS exposure. A future where communities can work together, unburdened by the presence of these persistent and toxic chemicals.

This is the future we can create together. To achieve this brighter tomorrow, we need a new generation of water treatment solutions that are as strong and persistent as the forever chemicals themselves. We need a solution that not only addresses the immediate threat but ends the never-ending cycle and eradicates PFAS at its core, ridding our environment of “forever” chemicals for good.

ARE
PFAS?

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large group of man-made chemicals which have been used in many products for their water-resistant, oil-resistant, lubrication, or non-flammable properties: fire-fighting foams, anti-stick coating on cookware, food packaging, furniture, carpets, clothing, and cosmetics. PFAS are all characterized by carbon-fluorine (C-F) chemical bonds, which are highly stable and will not biodegrade. These compounds enter and contaminate our surface and ground water resources via multiple means – industrial sites, airports, landfill leachate, and municipal wastewater, among others.

Harmful and widespread PFAS contamination is an urgent public health and environmental crisis facing communities across the globe. PFAS has been linked negative health effects including a variety of cancers. In March 2023, EPA took a key step to protect health by proposing national legally enforceable levels for six PFAS that have been detected in drinking water. This is the first time in 25 years that new maximum contaminant levels have been proposed for enforceable regulation in drinking water.
